Some year’s back Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth put together a one-time offshoot project called Society’s Ills to cover a slew of songs by the infamous 7 Seconds. Regrouped (and renamed Demolished Thoughts) Thurston Moore assembled a new group of players: J Mascis, Don Fleming, Andrew W.K. and Awesome Allison. As the Red 7 filled up with fans of all participants, Dave Sweetapple ran to the microphone and asked, “is Jonah from Fucked Up here?” Once Jonah (Falco) was located they brought him backstage quickly. Mere moments after that, the company of players showed up on stage and Moore announced since their bassist Andrew WK got lost and couldn’t find the venue, Jonah would be subbing in for bass duties. With that, Moore began ranting, pacing back-and-forth on stage and Mascis began the hardcore onslaught. Drummer Awesome Allison annihilated her kit as the band ripped out each thirty-second song. Moore continued his tirades with each new number, frantically turning over pages in a notebook to reference each song’s lyrics. The audience was an elated, orgy of moshing and crowd surfing, each emphatically enjoying the concise carnage in it all. This was a true SXSW rarity not-to-be missed.
