Grabbing an onlooker from the side of the stage and holding his hand Sharon Jones sang, “If I give you my love are you gonna give it back?” with confidence and sexual charisma. The crowd roared with enthusiastic glee to every note and shake of her hips. Backed by her band the Dap-Kings, she strutted and wailed like the R&B and funk legends of old. Like classic James Brown from the 60’s she led the Dap-Kings through funked-out jams at one point even offering real-time examples of vintage dance steps like the mashed potato and the ride the pony, singing “Oomph, there I go.” The band closed out with their soulful staple, “100 Days, 100 Nights.”
