This SXSW was also a return (of sorts) for Hole. Following Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings as the finale of the yearly Spin party, Courtney’s often troubled “band” was in top form. This can almost entirely be attributed to the fact that Love’s frame of mind was coherent and focused. Some of the usual pottymouth-ing still happened–she demanded the band’s name didn’t mean “vagina” instead only a “hole.” Early in the set she worked in a short snippet of the Rolling Stone’s “Sympathy for the Devil.” Not long after came early hit “Miss World.” “Violet” turned out to be the real show stealer though, her defiant call of, “Go on take everything / take everything I want you to,” is still as attention-grabbing as it ever was.
