Here’s a real treat for folks who like rock with a pulse. The Sleepy Sun somehow impossibly came off sounding like The Kills hot wired by Black Sabbath and infused with Mark Lanegan’s soulful ruminations and vocal color. Undulating through deep currents of rock crescendos and precision percussion punctuated low tempo atmospherics. The group’s two singers–one male, one female–wailed through held-note histrionics and nuanced sighs. As an added treat, the band brought out a section of the Austin Children’s Choir for the final three songs, adding just the right amount of color to render undulating perfectly into uplifting. Closing with an energetic cover of The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight,” The Sleepy Sun established they were completely ready for prime time.
