Famed Austinian Roky Erickson teamed up with Austin newcomers Okkervil River two years ago at SXSW to high praise. Now, Okkervil River has joined Roky as a backing band for a new album, True Love Cast Out All Evil. The combo packed the outdoor stage at the Paste party, throngs of music fans, inching towards a crowded tent craning their neck’s to try and see them. Okkervil River’s Will Sheff’s cleaner folk-based voice complemented Erickson’s gruff, throaty intonations. Erickson belted out, “Two-headed dog/two-headed dog,” while Sheff directed the sound and led the group. A nice hybrid of folk, soul and Americana rock, this was a nice appetizer for their collaborative album.
