As part of The Smashing Pumpkin’s eventual 44-song album to be entitled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, the Pumpkins have released their first single, “A Song For A Son” for free via their website and AOL’s Spinner page. Fans can not only download the song for free, but also opt to host the free download widget on their own websites as well.
According to the band’s leader, Billy Corgan, the entire album will be released one song at a time until all 44 tracks are out, completely free of charge. Corgan goes on to say that the album, including “A Song For A Son” “Harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins…(A Song For A Son) sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins that I grew up with.”
“A Song For A Son” was part of the first recording sessions for this record back in September, which also included “Astal Planes,” “Widow Wake My Mind,” and “A Stitch in Time.” “A Song For A Son,” however, “had the right epic quality” to be the first single off of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.
Highly limited edition EPs of 4 songs each, up to 44, will be available as essentially collector’s items that will include the art associated with the album, and not just the music. “The EPs will be more like mini-box sets rather than [a] normal CD single” and will available with different version – digital as opposed to a demo, for example. Teargarden by Kaleidyscope will eventually be issued independently as a deluxe box set of sorts (not just a repackaging of the EPs) and Corgan and the Pumpkins will embark on a world tour in the spring of 2010.
