Flight of the Conchords – I Told You I Was Freaky

On first listen Flight of the Conchords might sound like some kind of Saturday Night Live spoof, but the duo are somehow popular and prodigious enough to have earned themselves a show on HBO and a Grammy nomination. On their latest album I Told You I Was Freaky, the songs pulled from their second season on TV range from rap to techno, indie to folk. The duo of Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement create all their own beats and lyrics, but the uninitiated may be confused at what this group is trying to offer. The two constants: Most of their work covers women and sex, and each song is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Flight of the Conchords have a nonchalant, sarcastic way of putting together these songs. Each has a story told so flawlessly that you can’t go a minute without laughing. A witty highlight is “Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor),” complete with a beat that’s pretty legit coming from a comedy troupe. “Were Both in Love with a Sexy Lady,” meanwhile, seems like it would be at home in R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet,” full of back-and-forth dialogue about both players spying the same woman at the same time.

McKenzie and Clement give a classic Adam Sandler feel to their songs, full of originality and spunk without apology. Flight of the Conchords have talent seeping from their pores, evident in their skillfully overexaggerated situations and comedic setups. I Told You I Was Freaky is a success of imagination that will leave you in stitches from laughter.
