In honor of The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society exhibit and Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh’s appearance at the fundraiser at the New York Historical Society on October 21st, the Empire State Building was lit in tie-dye colors Monday night (October 19th) to celebrate the band’s iconic imagery and psychedelic influences.
The exhibit, largely drawn from the University of California, Santa Cruz’s extensive Grateful Dead archive, will include original “concert and recording posters, album art,
large-scale marionettes and other stage props, banners and decorated fan
mail,” in addition to exploring “the musical creativity and influence of the Grateful Dead from 1965 to 1995, the sociological phenomenon of the Deadheads (the band’s network of devoted fans) and the enduring impact of the Dead’s pioneering approach to the music business.”
Set to be on display in March 2010, tickets for the fundraiser on October 21st can be purchased here.
