The Pixies Release “Monstrous” Box Set Minotaur

The Pixies have announced the presale for the deluxe and limited editions of their box set package, Minotaur. Not only will the band and Vaughn Oliver (the original graphic designer of The Pixies’ studio albums) hand-sign all 3000 copies of the Limited Edition sets, but they have added even more content to the monumental collection of Pixie works.

Minotaur has now gained weight and content since it was first announced. At a whopping 25-pounds, the set is now incased in a custom clamshell container reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Intended to be more like an art object, rather than a CD box set, Frank Black of the Pixies hopes Minotaur will sit at a place of pride “on your marble coffee table with your other art books.” The list of contents for each edition follows at the end of this post.

Minotaur is now avail for pre-order here. The Deluxe Edition will retail for $175, while the Limited Edition will go for $495 and both will be shipping between September and October.

Although Minotaur is really all about the Pixies, Oliver wanted to evolve the ideas that influenced the original studio artwork for this re-packaging. He encouraged the slightly hesitant Larbalestier that although the old sleeves (with the topless Spanish dancer and the red planet) “have become iconic,  icons are there to be shot down” and to “take all those same inspirations and create a new body of work”

And the result? “It’s beyond my expectations. I thought it was going to be your typical box set, but it’s monstrous, I’ve never seen anything like it,” according to the Pixies’ David Lovering.
