Enjoy Walking Off a Pier
Late of the Pier’s Fantasy Black Channel is a bizarre mix of 80’s-influenced sounds which may cause listeners to get lost trying to figure out what the band is getting at.Fantasy Black Channel‘s single, “The Bears are Coming,” starts with African drums and segues into hip-hop with synth and electronic stylings. Each song on the album is diverse, giving Late of the Pier no uniform sound. “Bathroom Gurgle,” for instance, is a chaotic song full of dramatic peaks and valleys that also samples Mr. Kool-Aid. It is followed by a short hidden acoustic track, which gives listeners a break before “Very WAV,” a song that seems to take its musical cues from Richard Simmons soundtracks and loud New Yorkers. The album’s highlight is Samuel Eastgate’s vocals which range from deep and alluring to high and squeaky.
Fantasy Black Channel is an acquired taste that gets better with each song. If you like music with great beats and enjoy a bit of the 80’s with a modern electro spin, Late of the Pier might be the band for you.
