The Purple One, the artist who was formerly known as, but has recently reverted back to Prince has unveiled an ambitious agenda of releasing 3 albums in 2009 without the assistance of a label. With a “major retailer” in talks for a physical release, there will be a new Prince web site to make the albums available digitally.
With the sparse details currently available, 2 of the 3 albums are Prince projects titled MPLSOUND, which is electro-driven and features a guest appearance by Q-Tip, and the more guitar-driven Lotus Flower. The third album is Elixir from protege Bria Valente in which The Purple One is heavily involved.
While cynics may say that he’s trying to outdo the likes of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails with these tactics, but folks shouldn’t forget how he originally released his 2007 effort, Plant Earth. He gave that away with copies of the UK newspaper The Daily Mail. It did eventually see physical release via Columbia Records, it could be said that this is a natural evolution for Prince.http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/prince-to-roll-out-three-albums-this-year-1003926392.story
