On September 2, Rage Against the Machine showed up to perform at the Ripple Effect concert on Minnesota’s State Capitol’s lawn in protest of the RNC.
Without a proper permit, police wouldn’t let the band perform so the band spoke with concert organizers backstage. The crowd erupted singing “The Star Spangled Banner,” chanting “Free Speech and “***** you I won’t do what you tell me.”
Refusing to be beaten by the system, the band went in front of the crowd and performed acapella versions of “Bulls on Parade” and “Killing in the Name” with a megaphone. Following these two songs, they led the crowd in a march towards the Xcel Energy Center.
