My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges

Versatility Urges

Somewhere between Tom Petty, Duran Duran and some new age psychedelic indie rock—nicely complemented by strobe lights—lay My Morning Jacket. Originating from Kentucky, finding traces of country is easy on their newest album, Evil Urges, but it is nearly impossible to fit this group into that or any other single genre. Lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jim James creates an array of sounds throughout the album, beginning with two tracks sung so high you’d swear Michael Jackson has made a comeback. James starts off strong in the title track both musically and lyrically: “It ain’t evil baby if ya ain’t hurting anybody.” “Highly Suspicious” includes a strange compilation of guitar solo and vocal styling. James is echoed by a deep voice throughout the chorus, has giggling fits throughout the song, and drops definitively jam-band lyrics—some nonsensical (“Peanut butter pudding surprise”), others repeated over and over.

Several tracks include love themes; many ballads are even reminiscent of America in composition. James is talented to the point that he creates a completely different vocal sound on nearly every track. “Sec Walkin” is the country hit of the album, while the backup vocals of “Two Halves” suggest the Grease soundtrack. The album is intriguing and unique, new styles awaiting the listener at every turn.

“Aluminum Park” takes on the challenge of a rock guitar solo, creating a near headbanging, emo sound. “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Part 2” features intense whammy effects and intriguing lyrics which may be somewhat political: “Cuz it’s been so long, since someone challenged me / and made me think about the way things are / made me think about the way they could be.”

The true brilliance behind My Morning Jacket is their ability to create a truly exhilarating album filled with nothing but attention-grabbing tracks. Vocal and instrumental talent is the root of this band. Beginning to end, Evil Urges is one solid ride.
