Nirvana Gets a Dance Treatment

Seattle’s Spectrum Dance Theater has taken Nirvana’s seminal 1991 album, Nevermind, and created a new dance-based production from it. The show has been choreographed by Broadway veteran Donald Byrd and will incorporate moves from the Los Angeles punk scene.

“The tragedy of his drug addiction that didn’t allow (Kurt Cobain) to see with the kind of clarity that would have made for different choices, I was just kind of drawn to that,” said Byrd on his decision to do the project.

While he insists that the show will not be biographical, Byrd calls Cobain’s life an “inspirational departure point,” and dancers have been cast to represent both Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love.

The production will have its world premiere March 31st at the Moore Theatre in Seattle.
