As a response to extensive positive fan mail to her 1986 song “True Colors,” Cyndi Lauper has signed on to headline the new “True Colors” tour, which will hit major cities nationwide to promote gay rights. The tour is sponsored by MTV affiliate Logo, the network that targets gay audiences. Audience members will be given purple wristbands with the slogan “Erase Hate” from the Matthew Shepard organization, named for a gay youth killed in a hate crime. A dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, which advocates equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender people.
Other headliners include Deborah Harry, Erasure and Margaret Cho, as well as a guest appearance by Rufus Wainwright. The 15-city tour begins June 8th in Las Vegas and ends in Los Angeles on June 30th. Other stops include Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, Atlantic City, N.J., Boston, Washington, New York, Toronto, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Diego and San Francisco.
