Pink Floyd founding frontman, prog rock pioneer, and musical mad genius, Syd Barrett, has passed away at the age of 60. According to a band spokesperson, “Syd died peacefully a couple of days ago and a private funeral will be held in his honor.”
Syd Barrett wrote songs that were odd, charming and as psychedelic as will ever be. He wrote Pink Floyd’s first masterpiece, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which contained several of the bands early hits. “Bike,” “Astronomy Domine,” “Lucifer Sam,” and “Chapter 24” all came from Piper. He also leaves one of the most out-there legacies in all of rock behind in the form of albums such as Opal and The Madcap Laughs.
Floyd’s surviving members, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Right, and David Gilmour were “very upset and sad to learn of his death,” they said in a statement. “Syd was the guiding light of the original lineup,” they added.http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/11/britain.floyd/index.html
