Jack Johnson – Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies For The Film Curious George

Child’s Play

Jack Johnson is back, providing the musical voice to Curious George. The soundtrack, Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies For The Film Curious George, includes 13 tracks geared toward family fun. “Replacing Johnson’s typically PG rating with a G rating, this album is a superior alternative to the redundant, childhood favorites like Rafi. Upside Down, the opening track, includes enjoyable, upbeat tempos sure to entertain any member of your family. Similarly, the soft lullaby, “Wrong Turn,” features vocal harmonies not often used by Johnson, which provide a sophistication suitable for all. While “Broken” falls into this category as well, the bass feels overpowering and doesn’t always match the vocals and guitar.

“We’re Going To Be Friends” launches the junior portion of the album. Minimal instrumentation and storytelling lyrics are ideal for any tot in the household. “Fall is here, hear the yell/ Back to school, ring the bell.” “The 3 R’s” teaches children to “reduce, reuse, recycle” while following Schoolhouse Rocks‘ “Three is the Magic Number.” Children sing along at the end, providing encouragement for the kids listening at home.

Johnson included some friends in the endeavor. Ben Harper contributes vocals to “With My Own Two Hands,” and G. Love assists with “Jungle Gym.” Both songs are sweet and definitely appropriate for children, but they’re probably too jejune for the older crowd. Matt Costa’s contributions to “Lullaby” are the most natural. On any other album the song would prevail, however knowing it’s for children may damper your reaction.

Johnson aced the project of a soundtrack for children with Sing-A-Longs. While likely too simple for the average adult, any parent will be grateful for this new edition.
