Recorded in his new home in Spain, Josh Rouse’s Subtitulo provides a worldly, blithe collection of ten songs not to be missed. Optimism prevails through romantic lyrics and predominantly up-tempo instrumentation.Quiet Town, the opening track, provides the fullest musical score with guitar, a moving bass, and light persistent drumming. The lyrics assure Rouse is happy with his new home: “So for now, I wanna stay in this quiet town.” The jazzy “Summertime” reminisces highlights of the sunny season. The musical breakdown at the conclusion will have you grooving like a cabana boy. “His Majesty Rides” is the sybaritic twin to “Summertime.” The carefree percussion and playful vocals yield a pleaser. Even the instrumental “La Costa Blanca” will leave you wanting more. Intimate details are disclosed in “It Looks Like Love,” while romantic professions are accompanied by slurred strings in “Wonderful.”
In the lone downer, “Jersey Clowns,” fragile guitar, strings and bass pave way for the loss of love. “Who’s gonna break the news that his lady’s run loose/Yeah it’s gettin’ round… ‘Cuz being down with some Jersey clowns/Can almost drive you insane.” Old habits break in “Givin’ It Up.” Rouse sings, “I’m givin’ it up for good, gotta tell ya dear/That was a bad time/But I’ll be comin’ around knockin’ on your door,” with enlivening percussion and strings bringing a disco feel. “The Man Who…” tells a troubled story disguised by upbeat grooving and female backup vocals provided by Paz Suay.
