Making his debut after a long career on the Philadelphia underground circuit, Adam 12 is eating his way up the rap food chain. Alongside DJ Panek, 12 creates an uncanny world of comedy, horror, and deviation. It’s comical, offensive, menacing and offers endless entertainment to those who crave all things grimy. Skeletons begins with “Welcome To My Room” in which DJ Panek provides some hair raising cuts on the turntables and Adam shreds the mic with precise timing and a confident flow. His metaphors and imagery are well executed as he does what he does best, providing battle lyrics with effortless precision and wit. This powerful display of lyricism peaks with “Grade Curve” featuring Reef The Lost Cause. Reef and Adam come off fresh and clean with lines like “I’ll tear the skin off this sucka like barbecue chicken/I’m divine inspiration/ya’ll just mental midgets.”
Aside from using the mic as a weapon Adam also tells some twisted tales of strip clubs, self destruction and self medication. “Dirtballs” visits a hands-on world of sin, somewhere between a strip club and a whorehouse as Adam and cohorts, Reef and Digs Darklighter, coerce working girls into some extra-curricular activities. The madness continues with “Gonzo Stimulation,” a musical adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, creating an eerily psychedelic anthem.
Skeletons is an explicit, hard hitting production detailing the warped world of a struggling emcee. Adam 12 comes with a great sense of cynicism and some well-timed punch lines that he delivers with energy and infectious confidence; an impressive debut without a doubt.
