Mourning For The Past
Unwritten Law used to be a punk band. They used to have aggressive, catchy songs that kids could dance to. Their latest effort, Here’s to the Mourning, is a piece of a radio-friendly trash, devoid of anything worthwhile.Going from an underground punk band to selling out stadiums is a tough transition, since the ideals behind punk rock are greatly ingrained in staying true to yourself, and your fans. Some bands make the transition, Unwritten Law is floundering. The album isn’t cohesive at all. None of the tracks work together, each pulling at different directions, making the album a hodge-podge of songs and boring vocals.
Trying new things is great for a band, but when a supposed punk band starts their album with a track called “Intro,” that sounds like an odd electronica beat, you know it’s going to be bad. It gets worse though, with “Get Up,” which could be a lackluster imitation of AFI. The sappy “Save Me” is simply horrible, and then they give us the terrible ska-styled track “I Like the Way.” Sublime anyone?
The album keeps going, with boring awful song after another. There is not a single track on this album that is worth listening to. On their website www.unwrittenlaw.com it says the following: “Unwritten Law inhabits the upper echelon of successful punk bands.” Notice how it doesn’t say ‘good’ punk bands. So what if they sell a million CDs if their music doesn’t have any originality, style, or quality to it. While music like this may sell, it definitely doesn’t have the integrity of their previous releases.
