Various Artists – Sprout: Official Soundtrack

Surf’s Up: Thumbs Up!

Let’s face it, music videos are great because you’re listening to quality music and watching it at the same time. It’s the very definition of “eye candy.” In the past decade, some really smart producers swung it the other way and replaced the visuals of rockers with footage of athletes. The soundtrack to
Sprout
, a surfing montage, is a selection of fourteen songs from thirty some odd cuts played in the film. This selection is eclectic enough to suit anyone’s musical needs. The aim of the soundtrack was to create oceanic sounds with a carefree spirit. The Sprout House Band, consisting of all-stars Tommy Guerrero (skateboarder/guitarist), Jack Johnson (surfer/singer/songwriter), Money Mark (keyboardist for the Beastie Boys), and Adam Topol (drums for Jack Johnson and The Martinis), complete this with soothing bass lines, laid back drums, and twangy guitars. “Got My Sunshine” by Mojave 3, follows the same tune. The lyrics are poetic, and the backup singers top off the image. The Shins pulled in an original hit, “When I Goose Step,” which really emphasizes how laid back and utterly awesome they are. These tracks aside, the album’s target may have jumped state a little; “Banderila,” by Calexico, is one peso shy of a mariachi band, and “Of The Periphery” is pure smooth jazz. They are both well played and incredibly stylish, but you may want to leave your bikini and coconut rum at home.

This compilation of musical endeavors is one not to be missed. It may not be the island escape or the bodacious surfing adventure you were hoping for, but it is a musical oasis.
