With a name like Dillinger Escape Plan, you sort of expect a different, almost unconventionally sounding band. But there’s your token obscure band, and then there’s Dillinger Escape Plan’s Miss Machine – a chaotic rollercoaster ride through an amalgamation of musical styles. The end result leaves the listener startled and perhaps a bit overwhelmed at the sheer velocity and intensity of the music, but ultimately and most importantly, somehow leaves the listener wanting more.

Despite the variance in musical styles and abilities showcased on Miss Machine, Dillinger Escape Plan’s roots remain firmly planted in aggressive, calculated rock churned together with screaming vocals spouting undecipherable lyrics. Yeah, it”s been done before. But what makes this record so intriguing is the band’s unique ability to abruptly switch gears and engage in a sound that is totally different from how the song started, all the while perfectly encapsulating everything so it all neatly meshes together.

Jazz influenced rhythms and melodic interludes put the icing on the cake of Miss Machine. The energy generated from each song could go toe-to-toe with any metal band out there, while the sheer speed and chunky guitar breakdowns could rival any punk band. But that isn’t to say that all fans of metal and punk will take to the band’s somewhat avant garde approach to rock. It just might be too chaotic, too intense for some. But clearly Dillinger Escape Plan isn’t about acquiring fame by mainstream means. Indeed, the band showcase a very progressive sound that goes above and beyond the borders or rock – pushing the limits anyway they can.
