Earlier this month, copyright regulators in Canada deemed peer-to-peer downloading of copyrighted material legal, but uploading illegal.

The decision is finding critics among, not surprisingly, the Canadian Recording Industry Association (much like our RIAA).

Under current Canadian laws, consumers pay taxes on certain media that could be used to make personal copies of material, such as blank cassettes and CDs. MP3 players have since been added to this list and consumers can expect to pay anywhere from $2 to $25 depending on the player’s capacity.
