2004 will be a big year for Metallica as they will be embarking on a world tour, printing their first-ever book, and releasing a documentary to theaters.
The band will be traipsing across the great West throughout March for the first leg of the North American tour. Godsmack is scheduled to open. From late May to early July, Metallica is set to hit Europe. No opener has been announced.
On the heels of this tour will be the first official book to be published by Metallica, tentatively titled SO WHAT! The Metallibook by Metallica. The book will feature history of the band compiled from past issues of their Fan Club magazine SO WHAT!, as well as over 1,000 photographs, band commentary, interviews, and fan artwork.
As if that weren’t enough, Metallica will also be releasing a documentary entitled Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. The film was directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, the duo who helped bring national attention to the case of the West Memphis Three with their HBO documentaries, Paradise Lost and Paradise Lost 2. The film will premiere at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and will then be released to public theaters. It was shot across the two-years spent making the Grammy-nominated album St. Anger and does not shy away from any controversy. Typical band feuds between James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are present, as well as Hetfield’s stints in rehab, $40,000 per month band therapy sessions, Napster, and perhaps most interestingly, the auditions to find a replacement for bassist Jason Newsted.
