Grab Your Ween!
Ok, here’s my theory. Dean and Gene Ween built a time machine, traveled back to 1967, hung out with Syd Barrett and the rest of Pink Floyd, wrote a bunch of songs while on a cocktail of drugs, traveled back to present-day New Jersey and recorded Quebec. Seriously, they are twenty years into their career and Ween still shows no sign of running out of quality weirdness any time soon.Quebec starts with the hard rockin’ warning “Its Gonna Be A Long Night” only to immediately drop all their momentum with “Zoloft”, the literal feel-good song on the album. After that comes a smorgasbord of sonic silliness for fans of pre- Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa’s We’re Only In It For the Money , and Melvins’ The Bootlicker and Stag. “Happy Colored Marbles” will be the soundtrack for your next week of nightmares. “Hey There Fancypants” sounds like it was written and recorded by cartoons.
Producer Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band) definitely helps bring Ween’s reverb-drenched progressive rock roots to the surface along with plenty of strings, synth and epic David Gilmore-esque guitar solos. Be warned though, listening to Quebec around other people will definitely cause them to question your sanity. As always, we are left asking is Ween a ridiculous band playing serious songs or a serious band playing ridiculous songs?
